Tom worked in a clothes shop in the town centre. One busy Saturday afternoon a tall man came in and asked for a pair of dark trousers. Tom found a pair in the right size and took them to the changing room.
“Try these on,” Tom said. “They should fit well.”
The man went into the changing room. Five minutes later he came out looking rather strange. The trousers were far too short. They stopped halfway down his legs.
“These are ridiculous!” the man said. “I look like a schoolboy.”
Tom checked the label. “Oh no. I gave you the wrong pair. These are for a much shorter customer. Wait here. I will find the correct ones.”
Tom hurried to the stockroom. He searched the shelves and found another pair. When he returned the man was still standing there in the short trousers, looking embarrassed. A group of customers had gathered and were smiling.
“Here you are,” Tom said. “These should be better.”
The man took the new pair into the changing room. This time the trousers were far too long. They covered his shoes completely and trailed on the floor.
“Now I look like a clown!” the man shouted. He stepped forward and tripped over the extra material. He fell flat on his face right in front of the other customers. Everyone laughed, including Tom, who could not stop himself.
The man stood up, red in the face. “This is not funny,” he said. “I need trousers that fit!”
Tom apologised and went back to the stockroom once more. He found a third pair and brought them out. The man tried them on carefully. This time they fitted perfectly.
“At last,” the man said. “These are fine. I will take them.”
As he paid at the till he turned to Tom with a small smile. “Next time I come in, please measure me first. I do not want another trip to the floor.”
Tom nodded. “Of course. And I promise I will check the labels twice.”
The man left the shop wearing his new trousers. Tom watched him walk away without falling over. Then Tom looked at the two wrong pairs still on the counter and started laughing again. It had been a very strange afternoon.
