Short Story 1015 – The Wrong Delivery (Int)

Tom waited at his door for the package. He ordered three plates for his kitchen. The delivery arrived early morning. A large box sat on his porch.

Tom opened the box carefully. Inside were not plates. He found five rubber chickens. Yellow ones with bright orange feet. They squeaked loudly when he squeezed them.

“This is wrong,” Tom said aloud.

He called the company. The lady on the phone was friendly. She heard him squeeze the chicken during the call. She laughed for ten seconds straight.

“I will send correct plates,” she promised. “And keep the chickens.”

Two days later, the plates arrived. White and plain. Perfect for dinner. But Tom kept the rubber chickens on his shelf.

His neighbours noticed them. They started bringing more rubber animals. A purple dog. A blue duck. An orange cat. Tom now has fifteen squeaky toys on his shelf.

Every time he opens the front door, one squeaks. His friends visit just to hear the noise. They throw rubber animals in the air. Everyone laughs together.

Mrs Green from next door brought a rubber elephant. It was grey and very large. When Tom pressed it, the sound came out like a trumpet.

Mr James from down the street added a rubber frog. Green with big white eyes. It jumped when dropped. Children loved watching it bounce.

Tom began hosting small gatherings on Saturday evenings. Friends would knock on his door. Each person added a toy to the collection. Now forty rubber animals sit on the shelves.

One evening, a man named Paul visited. He saw the collection and smiled. “I work at a toy factory,” he explained. “We make these for children’s hospitals.”

Paul gave Tom special permission. Any hospital could receive toys from his shop. Tom started visiting hospitals every Wednesday. Children chose which animal they wanted.

The squeaking followed Tom everywhere. Nurses knew his arrival by the noise. Children waited with smiles for his visit. Some picked chickens. Others chose frogs or elephants.

Six months passed. The hospital director wrote a letter. They thanked Tom for his kindness. He received a certificate for helping sick children.

Tom put the certificate on his wall beside the rubber toys. Visitors often asked about the strange display. Tom told them the full story each time.

The rubber chickens started with a mistake. But they ended up bringing joy to many people. Wrong deliveries sometimes start good stories.

Tom still uses his white plates for dinner. But guests remember the squeaking animals more than the food. And children remember the happy visits.
