Short Story 1008 – The Tailor’s Studio (Int)

Arthur worked in a small studio in the centre of London. He was a tailor. He made suits for men. One Tuesday morning, a man named Julian walked into the studio. Julian needed a suit for a wedding.

“Good morning,” Arthur said.

“How can I help you today?”

“I need a suit for a wedding next month,” Julian replied. “I want something very smart.”

Arthur nodded. He took out his measuring tape.

“Please stand here,” he said.

Julian stood in front of the mirror. Arthur measured his shoulders, his arms, and his legs.

“Now, we must choose the fabric,” Arthur said. He pointed to some rolls of cloth. “This wool is very thick and warm. This cotton is light and soft.”
Julian touched the wool. “I like this one. It feels strong.”

“Excellent choice,” Arthur said. “I will start cutting the cloth today. Please come back on Friday for the first fitting.”

On Friday, Julian returned. Arthur helped him put on the unfinished suit. Julian looked in the mirror.

“The shoulders are a bit tight,” Julian said.

“I will adjust them,” Arthur replied. He made some marks with a piece of chalk. “I will also shorten the trousers slightly.”

Arthur worked late into the evening. He sewed the seams and fixed the shoulders. He ironed the trousers until they were perfectly straight.

On Monday, Julian came back for the final fitting. He put on the suit. It fit perfectly.

“This is exactly what I wanted,” Julian said, smiling. “You are very skilled.”

“Thank you,” Arthur said. “I am glad you are happy with it.”

Julian paid for the suit and carried it out of the studio in a large paper bag. Arthur smiled and went back to his work. He had another suit to finish before the weekend.
