Short Story 1007 – The Special Recipe (Int)

Anna stood in her small kitchen and looked at the old notebook on the table. The pages were yellow and the writing was not easy to read. It belonged to her grandmother. Anna had kept it for many years but she had never tried any of the recipes inside.

Today was different. Her sister Maria was coming for dinner with her husband and their two children. Anna wanted to cook something special. She turned the pages slowly until she found a recipe for vegetable soup with herbs. The list of ingredients was simple: onions, carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, and a mixture of dried herbs from the hills near their old village.

Anna washed the vegetables and began to cut them into small pieces. She heated some oil in a large pot and added the onions first. The smell filled the room and reminded her of summers long ago. She added the other vegetables one by one and poured in water. Then she opened a small tin of herbs and sprinkled them carefully into the pot.

While the soup cooked, Anna set the table. She put out four plates and glasses. She even found some candles and lit them. The light made the room feel warm and friendly.

At six o’clock the doorbell rang. Maria came in with her family. The children ran to hug Anna and the adults exchanged smiles. Everyone sat down and Anna brought the pot to the table. She served the soup into the bowls.

Maria tasted it first. Her eyes opened wide. “This tastes exactly like Grandmother’s soup,” she said. “How did you make it?”

Anna showed her the notebook. Maria turned the pages with care. “I thought this was lost,” she said softly. “I am so glad you kept it.”

The children asked for more soup and the adults talked about old times. They laughed about the funny things that happened in the village and they remembered their grandmother’s kind voice. The evening passed quickly.

When it was time to leave, Maria hugged Anna tightly. “Thank you for this dinner,” she said. “It felt like home.”

Anna stood at the door and waved as they walked away. She went back into the kitchen and closed the notebook. She put it carefully on the shelf. Tomorrow she would try another recipe. For now, she was happy. The soup had brought the family together again, and that was enough.
