Short Story 1002 – The Night Shift Chef (UpI)

Marco arrived at the bistro at six in the evening. He had worked there for three years, cooking meals for hungry customers who came after their long days. Tonight was different though. His boss had told him to try something new with the menu.

The restaurant filled up quickly. People talked loudly and laughed while waiting for their food. Marco moved between the kitchen stations, chopping vegetables and stirring sauces. His hands knew every movement he needed to make. This was his world, the hot lights and busy noise around him.

An elderly couple sat at table five. The woman ordered the special pasta dish but asked for less cheese. Marco nodded and wrote down her request. He prepared the meal carefully, watching how the sauce thickened in the pan. When the waiter brought it out, the customer smiled and gave a thumbs up from her seat.

Two hours passed. The dinner rush slowed down. Marco wiped his face with a clean towel and leaned against the counter. His shoulders felt tired from standing all evening. A young man walked through the door wearing a grey suit. He looked nervous as he scanned the empty tables.

“I am looking for someone,” the man said to Marco.

“Who are you expecting?” Marco asked, washing his hands.

“My uncle. He works here as a cook. His name is Giovanni.”

Marco stopped moving. He understood now why this stranger had come. Giovanni had been his mentor when he started working at this restaurant. But Giovanni had left six months ago, saying he wanted to spend more time with his family in another city.

“Giovanni does not work here anymore,” Marco replied gently. “He retired last year.”

The younger man nodded slowly. “Thank you for telling me.” He placed twenty euros on the counter and turned toward the exit.

Marco watched him leave through the glass doors. He finished cleaning the kitchen before closing time. The lights dimmed as he locked the front door behind himself. Tomorrow would be just like today, another night of cooking for strangers who needed good food. That was enough for him.
