Short Story 998 – The Helpful Neighbour (Int)

Sarah moved into her new flat on a cold Monday. She had boxes everywhere and no food in the fridge. She felt tired and a little lonely.

That evening, someone knocked on her door. It was an old woman from the flat next door. Her name was Margaret.

“Hello,” said Margaret. “I saw you moving in. I made too much soup. Would you like some?”

Sarah was surprised but grateful. “Yes, please,” she said. “That is very kind.”

Margaret came in and put a pot of hot soup on the table. They sat and talked for an hour. Margaret told Sarah about the area, the shops, and the people. Sarah told Margaret about her new job.

Over the next few weeks, they became friends. Margaret helped Sarah with her shopping. Sarah helped Margaret with her computer. They shared meals and stories.

One day, Sarah came home and saw an ambulance outside. Two paramedics were helping Margaret into it. Sarah ran over.

“What happened?” she asked.

Margaret smiled weakly. “I fell,” she said. “I am fine. Do not worry.”

But Sarah did worry. She visited Margaret in the hospital every day. She brought her fruit and magazines. She sat with her and made her laugh.

After two weeks, Margaret came home. She could not walk well, so Sarah helped her. She cooked for her and cleaned her flat. She did everything she could.

“Why do you do all this?” asked Margaret one afternoon. “You do not have to.”

Sarah held her hand. “You were kind to me when I was alone,” she said. “Now it is my turn.”

Margaret cried a little. “I only gave you soup,” she said.

“That soup meant everything,” said Sarah. “It was not about the food. It was about someone caring.”

Margaret got better slowly. She used a stick to walk. But she was happy. She had a friend who loved her.

Every Monday evening, they ate soup together. It became their tradition. And neither of them was ever lonely again.
