Short Story 993 – The Big Performance (Int)

Sarah worked in a café in the centre of the city. Every evening after work she went home and sang. She loved music more than anything else. Her favourite songs were old British folk songs that told stories of the sea and the hills.

One afternoon a customer left a note on the table. The note said, “You have a beautiful voice. There is a singing competition next month. You should try.”

Sarah read the note carefully. She felt excited but also worried. She had never sung in front of many people before. At home that evening she looked at the competition poster online. The prize was a chance to perform in a large concert hall. She decided to enter.

She chose a traditional song about sailors returning home. Every night for three weeks she practised the words and the melody. She sang slowly at first, then faster, until the song felt natural. Sometimes her neighbour heard her through the wall and smiled.

On the morning of the competition Sarah put on her best dress. She took a bus to the theatre. Many other singers were already there. Some looked confident and talked loudly. Sarah sat quietly and repeated the first lines of her song in her head.

When it was her turn she walked onto the stage. The lights were bright and the room felt large. She took a deep breath and began to sing. At first her voice shook a little. Then she remembered the story in the song and sang with all her heart. The audience listened in silence. When she finished they clapped for a long time. Sarah smiled and left the stage.

Later the judges called the names of the winners. Sarah’s name came first. She could not believe it. She received a small silver cup and an invitation to sing in the concert hall the following spring.

From that day Sarah continued to practise. She still worked in the café, but now customers often asked her to sing a short song while they drank their tea. She always felt happy when she sang. The competition had given her courage, and she knew she would keep singing for many years.
