Short Story 990 – The Letter From The North (Int)

Anna lived in a small flat in Edinburgh. She worked in a café near the river. Every morning she served coffee and talked to customers.

One winter day, a letter arrived. The paper was blue. Anna did not know the handwriting.

Inside, there was a short message: “Dear Anna, please come to the old lighthouse in the north. I need to tell you something important. – Robert”

Robert was her older brother. He had moved to Iceland two years before. They had not talked much since then.

Anna was worried. She called Robert, but his phone was off.

The next day, she took a bus to the north of Scotland. The journey was long. Snow fell on the hills. At the end of the road, she saw the lighthouse. Robert stood outside.

“Why did you ask me to come here?” Anna said.

Robert smiled. “I am going to stay here. I got a job in the lighthouse. I wanted you to see it before I start.”

Anna was angry at first, then she laughed. “You made me travel for ten hours for that?”

“Yes,” Robert said. “And I have coffee inside. Real coffee, not from a machine.”

They went inside. The room was warm. They talked for hours about their family, their childhood, and their plans.

When Anna left, she was not worried anymore. She knew her brother was happy.
