Short Story 986 – The Moving Shadow (Int)

Tom worked in a small bookshop near the river. He liked the quiet evenings when the last customer left and he could tidy the shelves alone. One Thursday he noticed a thin black book on the floor under the poetry section. It had no title on the cover. He picked it up, brushed the dust away, and opened it.

Inside there were no words. Every page was blank, except for a dark shape in the middle of the first page. The shape looked like a person standing with its head down. Tom closed the book and put it on the counter. He locked the shop and walked home along the empty streets.

That night he woke up at three o’clock. The room felt cold. He sat up and saw the same dark shape standing in the corner by the wardrobe. It did not move. Tom switched on the light. The shape was gone. He told himself it was only a bad dream and went back to sleep.

The next evening the black book was still on the counter. Tom opened it again. The shape on the page had changed. Now its head was raised and its arms hung a little away from its body. Tom felt a chill on the back of his neck. He slammed the book shut and pushed it into a drawer.

On the third night the shadow appeared at the end of his bed. It was taller than before. Tom could see no face, only a black outline that seemed to breathe. He tried to shout but no sound came out. The shadow stepped closer. Its edges trembled like smoke.

Tom jumped out of bed and ran to the door. The shadow moved with him. Wherever he turned, it stayed one step behind. He switched on every light in the flat. The shadow grew thinner but did not disappear. It whispered his name in a soft, dry voice.

By morning Tom was exhausted. He went to the bookshop early and took the black book from the drawer. He carried it to the river and threw it in. The water closed over it at once. He waited, hoping the shadow would stay in the book. Then he walked back to the shop.

That evening the shadow was waiting inside the shop. It stood between the shelves, taller than the tallest bookcase. Tom backed away. The shadow stretched out one long arm and touched his shoulder. Cold spread through his body like water. He felt himself growing lighter. His feet left the floor. The shadow pulled him forward and stepped into the space where he had been.

Tom tried to move his arms. They would not answer. He looked down and saw only darkness. The shadow now wore his clothes and his face. It smiled with Tom’s mouth, locked the shop door, and walked home under the street lights.

In the flat the real Tom floated near the ceiling, thin and silent. He watched the shadow sit in his chair, open his books, and answer his telephone. No one ever noticed the difference. The shadow lived Tom’s life from that day on. And Tom remained a shadow, unable to speak, unable to leave, watching forever from the corners of the rooms.
