The sea was not blue. It was a heavy, oil-coloured grey that moved without making a sound. Clara stood on the shore, feeling the wet, black sand sink beneath her boots. She had come to this lonely part of the coast to find peace, but the silence here did not feel peaceful. It felt like a person holding their breath.
There were no birds in the sky and no seaweed on the stones. The only thing on the beach was a long, low concrete wall that disappeared into the fog. Clara walked closer to the water. The air smelled of old salt and something cold, like a freezer that had been left open for too long.
She looked down and noticed a line of small, white objects near her feet. They were not shells. They were smooth, white stones, perfectly round, spaced exactly ten centimetres apart. They stretched along the water line as far as she could see. Someone, or something, had placed them there with great care.
A soft splash broke the silence. Clara looked out at the grey water. A pale shape was moving just beneath the surface, about twenty meters away. It looked like a wide, flat hand, but it was the size of a car. It did not swim like a fish. It crawled along the sea floor, making the dark water ripple.
Clara took a step backward. The black sand felt thicker now, pulling at her shoes like wet cement. She tried to lift her right foot, but it was stuck. When she looked down, she saw that the black sand was rising. It was slowly crawling up her boots, moving like a dark liquid against the gravity.
The pale shape in the water stopped. It began to rise. A long, thin neck grew out of the grey sea, followed by a head that had no eyes, no nose, and no ears. It was just a smooth, white face with a wide, wet tear across the middle. The tear opened, revealing rows of small, human-like teeth.
Clara tried to scream, but the cold air froze the breath in her throat. The black sand was up to her knees now, heavy and freezing cold. She pulled with all her strength, but she could not move an inch. She was fixed to the beach, becoming a part of it.
The white creature did not rush. It moved through the shallow water toward her, its long arms sliding across the black sand. As it came closer, Clara saw the other white stones on the beach more clearly. They were not stones at all. They were the tops of human skulls, buried deep in the black earth, perfectly spaced, waiting for the tide to come in.
The creature reached out a cold, wet hand and touched Clara’s face. The black sand rushed up to her chest, closing tight around her ribs. The last thing she felt was the sharp bite of the teeth, and then the grey water rolled over her head, washing away her final breath into the silent sea.
