Elliot lived in Taunton and worked at the library. On his day off, he decided to go to the coast. He had not seen the sea for many months. He packed a sandwich, a bottle of water, and a book. Then he took the bus.

The journey was long but pleasant. Elliot watched the hills change to fields, and then he could smell salt in the air. When he arrived, the beach was busy with families and dogs. The sky was wide and open.

Elliot walked along the sand. He found a place near some rocks and sat down. He opened his book and read for an hour. Then he ate his sandwich. A group of children ran past him, laughing. One of them was flying a kite. The kite went high above the water.

Later, Elliot took off his shoes and walked to the edge of the sea. The water was cold on his feet. He stood there and listened to the waves. He thought about nothing and everything. He felt calm.

At four o’clock, he put his shoes on again. He bought an ice cream from a small van and watched the sun move lower in the sky. Soon it would be time for the bus back to Taunton.

On the bus home, Elliot was tired but happy. He looked out of the window as the fields went past. He closed his eyes. It had been a good day. He decided he would come to the coast again next month.
