Short Story 884 – The Good Friend (Beg)

John lives in a big town. He works in an office every day. After work he walks to the library.

He likes to read books there. The books tell good stories about people and places. John feels happy when he reads.

One day John sits at a table with his book. He sees a woman at the next table. Her name is Sarah.

Sarah reads a book too. John smiles at her. “Hello,” he says. “That book looks good.”

Sarah looks up and smiles back. “Yes it is,” she says. “I like stories about friends.”

They talk for a short time. They find they like the same stories. They laugh about the funny parts.

After that day they meet at the library often. They sit together at the same table. They talk about their books.

John tells Sarah about his work in the office. He says it is sometimes busy but he likes his friends there.

Sarah tells John about her job at the hospital. She helps people who feel ill. Her work is important but it makes her tired.

One week Sarah looks sad. John asks her why. “I feel tired from my work,” she says. “Some days are very long.”

John listens to her with care. Then he says, “Let us read a funny story today. It will help you feel better.”

They read the funny story together. Sarah laughs many times. She feels much better after that.

The next week John feels worried about his work. Sarah asks him why. John tells her about a big job he must finish.

Sarah listens to him. Then she says, “You can do it, John. You work hard every day.”

Her words make John feel strong. They read another good book together. The story is about people who help each other.

Now John and Sarah are very good friends. They meet at the library every week. They share their stories and their days.

They learn new words from the books. They help each other understand difficult parts.

One day they finish a very long book. They feel proud. “We did it together,” John says with a big smile.

Sarah says, “Yes, good friends make everything better.”

They plan to read more books next week. They are both very happy with their friendship.

John and Sarah know they will stay good friends for a long time.
