Short Story 874 – The Lighthouse Keeper’s Promise (UpI)

Elena lived in a small town on the north coast of Scotland. She worked in a bakery near the harbour and started work every morning before the sun rose. She liked the quiet hours when the town was still asleep and the only sounds were the sea and the birds.

One autumn morning, a new customer came into the bakery. His name was Tom. He was not from the town. He told Elena that he had moved there to look after the old lighthouse on the headland. The lighthouse had been empty for five years.

“I am going to switch the light on again,” he said. “Ships need it when the winter storms come.”

Elena smiled. “My grandfather used to visit the lighthouse when he was a fisherman. He said the light saved his boat more than once.”

Tom began to visit the bakery every day. He always bought two loaves of bread and a black coffee. Slowly, he and Elena became friends. He told her stories about his travels around the world. She told him about life in the town and the people she knew.

As winter arrived, the weather became dangerous. The wind was strong and the waves were high. One night, a terrible storm hit the coast. The electricity in the town stopped and the streets were dark. Elena could not sleep. She worried about the fishing boats that were still at sea.

She put on her coat and walked down to the harbour. The rain was heavy and cold. From the harbour, she looked towards the headland. The lighthouse was dark. Her heart felt cold with fear.

Suddenly, a small light appeared at the top of the tower. It grew brighter and brighter until it was shining across the sea. The great beam of light moved slowly through the rain and fog. It was working.

Elena waited at the harbour all night. Just before dawn, three fishing boats returned safely. The fishermen were tired and wet, but they were alive.

The next morning, Elena baked a special cake and took it to the lighthouse. Tom opened the door. He looked exhausted but happy.

“You kept your promise,” Elena said.

Tom smiled. “I had help. When the electricity failed, I remembered your grandfather. He always said a keeper must be ready for anything. I used the old backup generator.”

That spring, the town council held a celebration for Tom. They thanked him for making the coast safe again. Elena stood beside him. Later, they walked along the headland together.

“Will you stay here now?” Elena asked.

Tom looked at the lighthouse, then at her. “I think I have found a new reason to stay,” he said.

They continued to work in the town. Elena in her bakery, and Tom in his lighthouse. Every night, the light shone out to sea. And every morning, Tom came for his bread and coffee.
