Short Story 851 – The Big Market (UpB)

Anna lives in a city by the sea. She works in a small shop near the beach. The shop sells cups, plates, bowls, and bags. Anna opens the shop at nine every morning. She likes her job, but sometimes she feels tired. She wants to learn something new.

One day, after work, Anna walks home. On a street wall, she sees a bright poster. The poster says, “Cooking Class – Every Saturday Morning. Learn to make food from many countries. All people welcome.” Anna stops and reads it again. She loves food, and she likes to meet new people. She takes a photo of the poster with her phone.

On Saturday, Anna wakes up early. She feels a little nervous, but also excited. She takes a bus to the cooking school. The school is in an old building next to the market. The room is big and clean. The teacher is a kind man called Tom. He has a big smile.

There are six students in the room. They come from different places. They all sit at a big table. Tom says, “Hello, everyone. Today we make rice with vegetables and chicken. It is easy, cheap, and good for you.” He gives each person a knife and a board.

Anna listens very carefully. She cuts carrots, peppers, and onions. The onions make her eyes water, and everyone laughs. She puts the vegetables in a hot pan with oil. The food smells very nice. Tom shows them how to add salt and spices. The students talk while they cook. Anna learns that one man is a student, and one woman drives a bus.

After two hours, the food is ready. They all eat together at the table. Anna thinks her rice is the best food she has ever made. Tom says, “Good job, Anna. See you next week?” Anna says, “Yes, please!”

For four weeks, Anna goes to the class every Saturday. She learns to make soup, bread, and fish. She writes the recipes in a small notebook. At home, she tries to cook for her friend, Maria. Maria eats the food and says, “Wow, Anna! You are a very good cook now.”

One night, Anna is in her shop. Business is slow. She looks at her notebook of recipes, and she has an idea. She makes a small sign with paper and a pen. The sign says, “Food Class Here – Sunday Morning at 10. Learn to cook with Anna. Five pounds for one class.” She puts the sign in the shop window.

Next Sunday, Anna is nervous. At ten o’clock, three people come into her shop. One is an old man, one is a young woman, and one is a mother with her son. Anna closes the shop and moves the cups to make space. She teaches them how to make simple tomato soup. They cut, they cook, and they laugh. At the end, they eat the soup together. The old man says, “Thank you, Anna. I will come again.”

Now, every Sunday, Anna teaches cooking in her shop. On Saturdays, she still goes to Tom’s class to learn more. She still sells cups and plates from Monday to Friday. But on Sundays, her shop is full of people, noise, and the smell of good food. Anna is busy, but she is not tired now. She is very happy. This is the start of her new life, and she loves it.
