Ellen worked at the city museum gift shop. Every morning at 8:15 she ordered a flat white from the café across the road. The barista, a quiet man called Tom, always wrote her name on the cup with a small smile.
One Tuesday it rained hard. Ellen ran across the street late and soaked. The shop was full. Tom handed her a cup without a word and moved to the next customer. Ellen took it and left.
On the bus she sipped the drink. It was not coffee. It was hot chocolate with chilli. She hated chilli. She almost threw it away, but she saw a name on the cup: “Mara”. There was also a phone number under it.
At lunch Ellen looked at the number. She told herself not to call. It was not her business. But the rain had stopped and the museum was quiet. She dialled.
A woman answered. “Hello?”
“Hi, is this Mara?” Ellen said. “I think I have your drink. The barista mixed up our orders.”
Mara laughed. “I have yours. Your coffee is terrible. I like the chilli one.”
They met after work in the park to swap drinks. Mara was a nurse. She worked nights and loved spicy food. Ellen told her about dinosaur bones and museum tours. They talked for an hour.
The next week Mara came to the museum. The week after, Ellen visited the hospital café. Soon 8:15 meant two drinks and two names on two cups. Tom just smiled and kept writing.
Six months later, Ellen moved into Mara’s flat near the river. They kept the first mixed-up cups on a shelf in the kitchen. Under Mara’s cup, the phone number had faded. They did not need it anymore.
