Short Story 819 – The Blue Seed (Int)

Anna was a gardener on Mars. She lived in Dome 7 with two hundred other people. The air outside was too thin to breathe, so everyone stayed inside the glass domes.

One morning, Anna found a small blue seed in the red soil of her garden. She did not plant it. She did not know where it came from. The seed was bright blue and warm to touch.

“What are you?” Anna asked the seed.

Of course, the seed did not answer. Anna decided to plant it in a pot and water it every day.

After three days, a small plant grew. It had silver leaves and a thick blue stem. It grew very fast. After one week, it was taller than Anna. After two weeks, it touched the roof of the dome.

People came to see the strange plant. A scientist named Dr. Chen tested the leaves.

“This plant makes oxygen,” he said. “A lot of oxygen. Ten times more than our normal plants.”

The leader of Dome 7, Captain Morris, was worried. “We do not know what this is. It could be dangerous. We should cut it down.”

Anna said, “No. It is helping us. The air in the dome feels better now.”

That night, the plant started to glow. A soft blue light filled the whole dome. Then Anna heard a voice in her head. It was quiet and kind.

“Thank you for the water,” the voice said. “We are travellers. Our ship broke many years ago. We became seeds to wait. You helped us grow.”

“Who are you?” Anna thought.

“We are the Luma. We travel and make new worlds green. We can help your Mars.”

The next morning, the plant opened. Inside was not a flower, but a small door. From the door, hundreds of new blue seeds floated out. They went through the air system and out onto the red ground of Mars.

Captain Morris shouted, “Stop them!”

But it was too late. The seeds fell on the cold, empty land.

For one month, nothing happened. Then, small blue spots appeared on Mars. The spots grew. They were new Luma plants. Each one made oxygen and heat.

After one year, people could walk outside Dome 7 for one hour without a helmet. The air was still thin, but it was getting better.

After ten years, there were blue forests all over Mars. The sky was not pink anymore. It was light blue. Children played outside.

Anna was old now. She sat under the first Luma plant, which was now a giant tree. She touched its warm trunk.

“You did it,” she said. “You made a new world.”

The voice came back to her head, still quiet and kind. “No, Anna. You did it. You gave us water.”

Anna smiled. The work was finished. Mars was alive.
