Short Story 804 – The Clock Under The Bridge (Int)

On a warm Tuesday evening, Hannah walked beside the river, hoping to clear her mind after a long day at work. She often walked the same path, but tonight something unusual caught her attention. Beneath the old stone bridge, half-hidden in the shadows, she noticed a faint glow.

Curious, she stepped closer. There, resting on a rock, was a small brass clock. It was beautifully made, with tiny engraved patterns and a thin silver chain attached. The hands of the clock moved backwards, slowly but steadily.

Hannah looked around. No one else was nearby. She picked up the clock and felt a gentle vibration, as if it was humming. She opened the back panel and found a small handwritten note that read: “Time behaves for those who pay attention.”

She frowned, unsure what that meant. As she closed the panel, the clock ticked loudly, and the river suddenly became brighter, as if illuminated from beneath. The sound of the traffic above the bridge faded until she could not hear anything except the soft ticking.

A moment later, the light from the river dimmed, and everything returned to normal. Hannah felt strangely calm, as if the world had paused long enough for her to breathe properly for the first time in months.

She placed the clock back on the rock. It did not belong to her. The glow faded, and the ticking softened until it stopped completely.

As Hannah stepped away, she realised she felt lighter, clearer, and ready for tomorrow in a way she had not felt for years. She glanced back once more, but the clock was no longer there.

Hannah smiled. Whatever had happened, it had given her exactly what she needed.
