Short Story 798 – The Final Stretch (Adv)

Arthur tightened the laces on his running shoes. The morning air was cool against his skin. Around him, thousands of other participants stretched their legs. They stood on the wide avenue, waiting for the signal to begin. This was the city marathon, an event that drew runners from every corner of the globe. Arthur was not the youngest competitor, nor was he the fastest. However, he possessed a determination that burned brighter than the sun rising above the skyline.

The whistle blew. The crowd surged forward. Arthur found his rhythm immediately. He did not sprint; he conserved energy for the long distance ahead. His feet struck the pavement in a steady beat. Past the modern glass offices they ran, then through the older districts with cobblestone streets. The spectators lined the route, cheering loudly. Some waved flags. Others clapped their hands. The noise was immense, a wall of sound that pushed the runners onward.

At the halfway point, Arthur felt the first sign of fatigue. His muscles tightened. He approached a refreshment table. Volunteers handed out cups of water. He grabbed one, drank quickly, and tossed the plastic cup into a bin. He did not stop. Stopping meant losing momentum. He watched the runner ahead of him. A woman in a blue vest was maintaining a strong pace. Arthur decided to follow her lead.

The route turned towards the river. The bridge ahead was steep. This was the challenge everyone talked about. Many runners slowed down here. Arthur gritted his teeth. He focused on his breathing. In, out. In, out. He did not look at the top of the hill. He looked at the feet of the woman in blue. Step by step, he climbed. The burn in his legs was intense, but he refused to yield.

Reaching the summit, the path levelled out. The finish line was now visible in the distance. A large archway marked the end of the journey. The crowd density increased here. People stood on barriers, shouting encouragement. Arthur felt a second wind. The pain faded slightly, replaced by anticipation. He accelerated. He passed the woman in blue. She smiled and nodded at him. He nodded back.

The final hundred metres felt like an eternity. His lungs burned. His legs felt heavy. Yet, he pushed harder. The clock on the gantry ticked upwards. He could see the officials waiting with medals. He could see the open space beyond the barrier. This was the culmination of months of training. He crossed the white line on the ground. The timer stopped. He had done it.

Arthur bent over, hands on his knees, gasping for air. A volunteer draped a foil blanket over his shoulders. He stood up straight and looked back at the route. The city stood tall behind him. He had conquered the distance. He walked towards the medal collection area. There was no need for words. The finisher’s medal around his neck said everything. He was ready to go home and rest.
