Short Story 791 – The Man Who Sold The Weather (UpI)

On a bright Saturday morning, a small crowd gathered in the middle of a busy outdoor market. People stopped between stalls of fruit, bread, and second hand books. They were not watching a street musician or a magician. Instead, they were watching a man standing behind a folding table with a large handwritten sign.

The sign said: “Weather for Sale. Guaranteed.”

Most people assumed it was a joke. But the man behind the table looked completely serious. He wore a neat grey suit, polished shoes, and a calm smile. On the table were several small glass jars, each with a label.

A woman carrying a basket stepped closer.

“What exactly are you selling?” she asked.

The man nodded politely. “Weather.”

The woman laughed. “Weather?”

“Yes,” he said. “A warm afternoon. A gentle breeze. A refreshing rain shower. Whatever you need.”

She pointed to a jar with a pale blue label.

“What is that one?”

“Perfect sunshine for three hours,” the man replied. “Very popular with people planning picnics.”

A man behind her joined the conversation. “And what about that dark one?”

“Ah,” said the seller. “A dramatic thunderstorm. Only fifteen minutes long. Very impressive, but quite safe.”

The small crowd laughed again, but several people stayed to listen.

“How much?” asked the woman with the basket.

“Five pounds,” the man said.

“Five pounds for sunshine?”

“Three hours of it,” he said calmly.

The woman looked at the sky. Grey clouds were slowly moving across it.

“I have a garden party this afternoon,” she said thoughtfully.

After a moment, she placed a five pound note on the table.

The man handed her the jar.

“Open it outside at the time you want the sunshine,” he said.

The crowd watched carefully.

“You do not believe this works,” the man added.

“Of course not,” someone said.

But the woman smiled and placed the jar in her basket.

“Well,” she said, “if it does not work, I will only lose five pounds.”

She walked away.

The crowd slowly lost interest, and most people returned to their shopping.

Two hours later, the woman opened the jar in her garden.

Inside, there was nothing but air.

For a moment she felt foolish.

Then the clouds above her began to separate.

A bright circle of sunlight appeared directly over the garden.

Within minutes the sky above the garden was perfectly clear. Warm sunlight filled the space, while grey clouds remained everywhere else.

The garden party was a great success.

Guests sat comfortably outside, eating sandwiches and drinking tea in beautiful sunshine.

Three hours later, almost exactly, the clouds quietly returned.

The next morning, the woman hurried back to the market.

But the table was gone.

The man in the grey suit had disappeared.

She asked several stall owners if they had seen him.

One fruit seller nodded slowly.

“Yes,” he said. “He was here yesterday.”

“Do you know where he went?”

The fruit seller shrugged.

“He only comes when the weather is difficult,” he said. “Then he leaves again.”

The woman looked up at the sky.

It was raining heavily.

She sighed.

“I wish I had bought more jars,” she said.

Just then, a small folded note slipped out of her basket. She had not noticed it before.

She opened it.

Inside were four simple words:

“Thank you for believing.”

She smiled.

And although the rain continued to fall, the woman felt strangely certain that the man in the grey suit would return one day.

When the weather was difficult again.
