Short Story 712 – The Echo of Nova (UpB)

The spaceship ‘Nebula’ moved slowly. Inside, Elara watched tiny lights outside. They were stars. Elara was an explorer. She loved space.

Today was special. The Nebula was going to a new planet. Its name was Xylos. No human had ever been to Xylos.

“Ready, Elara?” asked Finn. He was the pilot. He was kind.

“Ready, Finn!” Elara smiled.

Soon, Xylos was big in the window. It was blue and green, like Earth. But there were strange patterns on its surface. They looked like lines, very straight.

The Nebula landed softly. Elara put on her space suit. Finn did too. “Be careful,” Finn said. “We don’t know what’s here.”

They walked out. The air was warm. It smelled a little like metal. The ground was soft, a silvery dust.

They walked towards the strange lines. They were massive. Not natural. “These are structures,” Elara whispered. “Like buildings.”

They reached one. It was a tall, smooth wall. It had no windows. No doors. Just a perfect surface. Elara touched it. It felt cool.

Suddenly, the wall glowed. A symbol appeared. It looked like a star, but with many points.

“What is it?” Finn asked. His voice was low.

Elara felt something in her mind. A feeling. Not words, but an idea. “It’s a message,” she said. “From a long time ago.”

More symbols appeared. They changed quickly. Elara focused. She closed her eyes. She felt the message stronger.

It was a story. A very old race lived here. They were very smart. They built these structures. They learned about the stars. And they learned something else. Something about the universe.

They found out that everything changes. Stars are born, and they die. Planets are made, and they break apart. Life starts, and it ends. This was the way of everything.

The race on Xylos grew sad. They didn’t want to end. So they tried to stop time. They built machines. Big machines. They put their knowledge and their very life into these machines. They hoped to live forever, as echoes.

But they failed. The universe cannot be stopped. Time continued. Their machines became these silent structures. Their echoes were faint.

Elara opened her eyes. She looked at the wall. The glow slowly faded. The symbol of the many-pointed star remained.

“What did you learn?” Finn asked gently.

Elara felt a strange mix of sadness and peace. “They found out that life is temporary,” she said. “And they tried to fight it. But it’s okay. Change is part of everything. It’s beautiful.”

She looked at the silent structures, reaching towards the sky. “They left a reminder,” she added. “To live fully, because it won’t last forever.”

Finn nodded slowly. He understood. They didn’t find new life on Xylos, not active life. But they found wisdom.

They went back to the Nebula. The journey home would be different. They knew more about the universe, and about themselves. The echo of Nova, the bright star that means ‘new’, was a powerful lesson.
