Short Story 708 – The Crystal of Darnath (UpB)

In the kingdom of Darnath, magic flowed through the air like the scent of spring flowers. It was a place where dragons soared and wizards conjured spells. But in the quiet village of Elden, something was wrong.

Mira, a young woman with long black hair and bright green eyes, noticed that the flowers in her garden were wilting. The sun did not shine brightly like before. People in the village were worried. They whispered about a dark force hiding in the nearby mountains, stealing the land’s magic.

One day, Mira decided to find the source of this darkness. She took her father’s old map and set off towards the mountains. The journey was long, and the path was rocky. She climbed steep hills and crossed small rivers. After hours of walking, she reached a cave that filled her with fear and excitement.

Inside the cave, the air was cold and damp. As Mira walked deeper, she found glowing crystals on the walls; they shimmered in many colors, but one crystal stood out. It was larger than the others and glowed a deep blue. Mira felt a pull towards it, as if the crystal was calling her name.

Suddenly, a loud roar echoed through the cave. A dragon, its scales dark like the night sky, appeared in front of her. Its eyes sparkled like stars. “Who dares enter my lair?” it demanded. Mira’s heart raced, but she stood tall.

“I am Mira of Elden,” she said bravely. “I seek the magic that has been stolen from my village.”

The dragon growled, smoke rising from its nostrils. “Many have come for the crystal, but none have succeeded. You must prove your worth.”

“Tell me how!” Mira replied, her voice strong.

“To reclaim the magic, you must solve a riddle,” the dragon said. “Listen carefully:

I can be cracked, made, told, and played. What am I?”

Mira thought hard. She remembered her father telling jokes and how they would laugh. “A joke!” she exclaimed.

The dragon’s eyes widened. “You are wise, young one! You have answered correctly. Take the crystal and use its magic wisely. But remember, it is not for power; it is for peace.”

With a nod of the dragon’s head, the blue crystal floated towards Mira. She grasped it tightly, feeling warmth spread through her body. As she exited the cave, the world around her changed. The dark clouds parted, revealing bright sun rays. The flowers in her garden bloomed once again.

Mira returned to Elden, and the villagers gathered around her. She held the crystal high, its light filling everyone with hope and joy. The magic had returned, and with it, peace.

From that day on, Mira became known as the Keeper of Darnath. She used the crystal to protect her village and the land, ensuring that no darkness would ever return.

And as for the dragon, it watched over Darnath from its mountain, proud of the brave heart that saved the kingdom.
