Short Story 607 – The Seaside Souvenir – Homphones 3 (Int)

It had been a long, lonely trip for Bella. She’d been on the road for weeks, trying to find a new sense of purpose. Her journey brought her to a small coastal town, nestled around a picturesque bay. As she walked the main street, her attention was caught by a brightly coloured bazaar. Stepping inside, she was overwhelmed by the truly bizarre assortment of goods, from antique trinkets to shimmering silks. She paused at one stall to admire a single, perfectly ripe berry. She had half a mind to buy it, but decided to save it to bury in her memory garden back home.

Just then, a man approached her. “You have to be careful with those,” he said with a kind smile. “I once saw a wasp get tangled in a little girl’s hair. I thought it was going to be a disaster, but a tiny little bee flew in and helped untangle it. It was a miracle.”

His name was Bey, and he introduced himself as the owner. He was handsome, her late beau would have approved, and wore a finely-crafted bow tie. He seemed to know everything about the town. After a short conversation, he offered to show her the local sights. Their walk took them past the main square, where a giant, metal bell rang out the hour. The sound was so loud it felt like it registered as a full bel on some unseen scale.

They eventually found themselves on a stretch of secluded beach, framed by a towering beech tree. The sun was warm, and the only sound was the steady beat of the waves against the shore. They spoke of everything. He asked her about her travels, and she admitted she had been looking for a sign to stay. He told her about a friend who had passed, and how they had placed a single glass of beer on his empty bier as a final toast.

She felt a new kind of energy in his presence, a powerful feeling she had not felt in years. He confessed he loved to cook, and she laughed as he explained his grandmother’s secret recipe for pickled beet root with a special kind of bean. As the sun began to set, she knew what she had to do. This was the sign she had been waiting for. She would stay.
