Short Story 574 – The Silence of Whispering Pines (Int)

Liam, a wildlife photographer, craved the untouched beauty of the wilderness. He chose the remote Blackwood Forest, a place known for its ancient, towering pines and the almost supernatural quiet that settled between them. He packed his gear, a week’s worth of supplies, and a sense of eager anticipation.

The first two days were perfect. Liam captured stunning shots of deer, rare birds, and the sun dappling through the dense canopy. The silence was profound, broken only by the rustle of leaves or the distant cry of a hawk. He felt truly alone, and it was glorious.

On the third morning, he woke to an unsettling change. The usual forest sounds were absent. No birdsong, no buzzing insects, no gentle breeze through the pines. The silence was absolute, heavy, and unnatural. It felt like the forest was holding its breath.

Liam tried to shake off the unease. He hiked deeper, searching for a stream he’d marked on his map. As he walked, he noticed something strange: the trees. Many of the ancient pines had peculiar, dark growths on their trunks, like hardened sap, but larger and more irregular. They seemed to pulse faintly, almost imperceptibly.

He reached the stream, but it too was silent. The water flowed, but there was no ripple, no gurgle. It was as if sound itself had been absorbed. Kneeling to refill his water bottle, he saw something in the clear water: small, dark, segmented creatures, like leeches, but with tiny, almost transparent wings, clinging to the submerged rocks. They were completely still.

A chill ran down Liam’s spine. He stood up slowly, his eyes scanning the surrounding woods. The silence pressed in on him, a physical weight. He felt watched, not by an animal, but by something ancient and patient.

He decided to head back to his camp, a growing sense of dread urging him to move faster. The dark growths on the trees seemed more numerous now, and he imagined he could hear a faint, high-pitched hum emanating from them, just at the edge of his hearing. It was like a subtle vibration, a frequency that made his teeth ache.

As dusk approached, the hum intensified. It wasn’t loud, but it filled the air, a constant, irritating drone. Liam reached his tent, his heart pounding. He zipped himself inside, trying to block out the sound, but it seeped through the fabric, vibrating through his sleeping bag, into his bones.

He tried to light his small camping lantern, but the match wouldn’t catch. The air inside the tent felt thick, somehow different. He fumbled for his phone, but there was no signal, just a faint, static hiss that mirrored the hum outside.

Then, he heard it, distinct from the hum: a soft, scraping sound against the outside of his tent. It was slow, deliberate, like something dragging itself across the ground. Liam froze, holding his breath. The hum grew louder, a chorus of unseen things.

A shadow fell across the tent wall, impossibly large, blocking the faint moonlight. He could see the outline of something massive, multi-limbed, moving slowly around his tent. The scraping continued, closer now, right beside his head.

Panic seized him. He fumbled for his hunting knife, his hand slick with sweat. He knew he couldn’t stay. With a desperate surge of adrenaline, he unzipped the tent flap and burst out.

What he saw made his blood run cold. The forest floor was alive with the segmented, winged creatures he’d seen in the stream. Thousands of them, millions, crawling over the roots, up the tree trunks, their tiny wings vibrating, creating the hum. They were drawn to the dark growths on the trees, feeding on them, or perhaps, being born from them. And the large shadow? It was a massive, grotesque version of the smaller creatures, its many legs slowly pulling it over the forest floor. Its head was a cluster of tiny, unblinking eyes.

Liam didn’t scream. He simply ran. He ran blindly through the silent, humming forest, the scraping sound of the giant creature behind him, the myriad small creatures crunching under his boots. He ran until his lungs burned, until his legs gave out, until he burst out of the tree line and tumbled onto the rough asphalt of a forgotten logging road.

He didn’t stop until he reached his car, parked miles away. He threw himself inside, locked the doors, and drove, not looking back. He never returned to Blackwood Forest. The silence, the hum, and the sight of those creatures were forever etched into his mind, a chilling reminder of what truly lurked in the deep, quiet places of the world.
