Short Story 419 – The Heat of Patience – Ramadan (UpB)

It was a bright and blistering day in Al Jazeera, a small desert town. The temperature had soared to 45 degrees Celsius. The sun was high in the sky, sending golden rays onto the sands. Birds were silent, and no one walked outside unless they had to. But inside his modest house, Omar was calm and ready.

Omar was fasting. It was the holy month of Ramadan, and he was proud to follow the traditions of his family and faith. From sunrise to sunset, he would not eat or drink. His stomach growled, and his throat felt dry, but he smiled. “This is my test of patience,” he thought.

The morning passed slowly. Omar decided to stay busy to forget about his hunger. He cleaned his small living room. The room had an old sofa, a round table, and a carpet with red and gold patterns. The fan on the ceiling turned slowly, moving the hot air around. Omar wiped the table and picked up the prayer beads that were lying there. “These keep me focused,” he murmured.

After cleaning, Omar sat down on the sofa with a book. He loved reading stories about history. Today, the book was about great travellers who crossed the desert centuries ago. “If they could survive weeks without proper food or water, surely I can manage one day,” Omar told himself.

At noon, the temperature rose higher. Omar heard the faint sound of a radio from his neighbour’s house. The news spoke of the heatwave, warning everyone to stay hydrated. Omar chuckled softly. “No water for me,” he whispered. He then got up and went to his window. Through the glass, he could see the dusty street. A dog lay in the shade, its tongue hanging out.

Omar returned to the sofa and rested his head. He remembered his mother’s words when he was a child: “Fasting makes you strong, Omar. It teaches you control and gratitude.” He smiled, thinking of his mother. She had passed away years ago, but her lessons remained in his heart.

The afternoon dragged on. The heat was intense. Omar felt his energy drop, but he told himself, “Just a little longer. Be strong.” He stood up and went to the kitchen to prepare for iftar, the meal to break his fast.

The kitchen was small, with white tiles and wooden cabinets. Omar washed some dates, a tradition to eat first at sunset. He placed them on a plate beside a glass of water. Then, he began cooking lentil soup, a simple yet comforting dish. The smell of garlic, onions, and spices filled the house. Omar’s mouth watered, but he turned away. “Patience,” he reminded himself.

Finally, the sky began to change. The bright blue softened into a gentle orange. Omar went to the balcony with his plate of dates and water. The mosque’s call to prayer echoed across the town. It was time. Omar whispered a quiet prayer of thanks before taking a date. He chewed slowly, savouring the sweetness. Then, he drank the water. It felt cool and refreshing, like a gift after a long wait.

As Omar ate his soup, he felt a deep sense of gratitude. The day had been challenging, but he had endured. He had proven to himself that he could be strong, even in the toughest conditions. The moon rose above the desert, casting silver light over the sands. Omar looked up at it and smiled. The day was done, and he was content.
