Short Story 279 – The Big Day

Sarah was very excited. Today was her best friend, Emily’s, birthday. Emily was turning twenty-five. Sarah had been planning this day for weeks. She had a surprise for her friend.

First, Sarah went to the bakery and bought a big chocolate cake. Emily loved chocolate cake. Next, Sarah went to the flower shop and bought a beautiful bouquet of lilies. Emily’s favourite flowers were lilies. Then, Sarah went home and started to cook dinner. Emily loved Sarah’s cooking. She made a big pot of spaghetti and meatballs.

At 7 pm, Sarah went to Emily’s house. She knocked on the door. Emily opened the door and looked surprised.

“Happy birthday, Emily!” Sarah said. “I have a surprise for you.”

Emily smiled. “What is it?” she asked.

“Come inside,” Sarah said. “I want to show you.”

Sarah led Emily into the living room. She had put candles on the cake and the lilies were in a beautiful vase on the coffee table. Emily’s eyes lit up.

“Wow!” Emily said. “This is amazing! Thank you, Sarah.”

“You’re welcome,” Sarah said. “Now, let’s eat!”

They sat down at the table and enjoyed the delicious meal. Sarah had bought Emily a new handbag as a gift. After dinner, they opened the presents and had a slice of cake. They talked and laughed for hours.

Later, they went to a club to dance. They danced until late and had a fantastic time.

The next day, Emily called Sarah.

“Thank you so much for everything,” she said. “You made my birthday the best ever!”

“I’m so glad you had a good time,” Sarah replied.

“I love you, Sarah,” Emily said.

“I love you too, Emily,” Sarah replied.

Sarah was happy that she had been able to make her best friend’s birthday special. It was the best birthday party ever.
