Short Story 233 – The Secret Garden

Elara had always been a city girl. Concrete jungles and towering skyscrapers were her familiar landscape. So, when her grandmother, Evelyn, insisted she spend a summer in her secluded cottage, Elara was less than thrilled. The idea of exchanging high heels for muddy boots and traffic noise for bird song was far from appealing.

Evelyn’s cottage was nestled in a valley, surrounded by rolling hills and a sprawling garden. It was a place untouched by time, where nature reigned supreme. Despite her initial reluctance, Elara found herself drawn to the garden. It was a riot of colours and scents, a secret world teeming with life.

Hidden behind a crumbling stone wall was a part of the garden that Evelyn called “the secret garden.” It was a wild, untamed space, overgrown with roses and honeysuckle. As Elara ventured deeper, she discovered a hidden bench, covered in moss and surrounded by a profusion of wildflowers.

Every morning, she would spend hours exploring the garden. She discovered a family of hedgehogs, a pair of nesting birds, and a curious old tree with a hollow trunk. The garden became her sanctuary, a place where she could escape the pressures of the city and reconnect with nature.

One afternoon, while pruning a rosebush, Elara found a small, rusted key hidden beneath the soil. Intrigued, she tried it on a weathered wooden door at the far end of the garden. To her astonishment, the door creaked open, revealing a hidden room.

Inside, the room was filled with sunlight that streamed through a large, arched window. It was a magical space, filled with bookshelves, a writing desk, and a collection of old paintings. In the centre of the room stood an easel with an unfinished portrait.

As the summer progressed, Elara spent countless hours in the secret room, lost in the world of the paintings and the books. She began to sketch and paint herself, finding a talent she never knew she possessed.

When summer ended, Elara returned to the city, but the garden and the secret room remained in her heart. The once reluctant city girl had discovered a love for nature and a hidden passion for art. And she knew that one day, she would return to the cottage and the secret garden, to continue the story that had begun that summer.
