Short Story 211 – The Saturday Night Delivery

The city buzzed with its usual Saturday night energy. Neon signs cast a colourful glow on the rain-slicked streets, and the air thrummed with the sound of laughter and music spilling from open cafes. Inside a cosy apartment, tucked away on a quiet side street, lived Maya, a young graphic designer with a passion for cooking.

Tonight, Maya wasn’t glued to her computer screen as usual. She was dressed in comfortable clothes, her hair tied back in a messy bun. Her tiny kitchen was a symphony of clanging pots and sizzling pans. The aroma of spices filled the air, promising a delicious feast.

Maya was preparing a special dinner for her friend, Daniel. They’d met a few months ago at a pottery class, and their shared love for art and good food had quickly formed a strong friendship.

Suddenly, a loud buzz echoed from Maya’s phone on the counter. It was a notification from her favourite food delivery app. Her heart sank.

“Ugh, not now,” she muttered, wiping her hands on her apron.

She’d completely forgotten! Earlier that week, while scrolling through the app with a rumbling stomach, she’d impulsively ordered a giant chocolate chip cookie from her favourite bakery on a whim. The delivery was supposed to arrive that very night.

“Maybe I can cancel it,” she thought, picking up her phone. But as soon as she opened the app, another notification popped up: “Your order is on its way!”

Disappointment washed over her. She couldn’t justify keeping a giant cookie when she was making a healthy and delicious meal for Daniel. Besides, she knew she shouldn’t indulge in sweets too often.

With a sigh, Maya decided to leave a note for the delivery person, explaining the situation and apologizing for the inconvenience.

Just then, the doorbell rang. Maya peeked through the peephole and saw a young woman with a bright smile standing outside, holding a large paper bag. Maya opened the door a crack.

“Hi, is this Maya’s apartment?” the delivery person asked, her voice friendly.

“Yes, that’s me,” Maya replied sheepishly. “Actually, this is a bit awkward…”

Before Maya could explain, the delivery person held up a finger. “Wait, hold on a second. Did you order the giant chocolate chip cookie?”

Maya’s eyes widened. “Uh, yes, but…”

“Look,” the delivery person interrupted, a mischievous glint in her eyes. “It’s a rainy Saturday night, perfect for a delicious cookie. How about a compromise?”

Maya was intrigued. “What do you have in mind?”

The delivery person grinned. “I’m Sarah, by the way. I’m actually on a break for a few minutes. How about we split the cookie? My shift can get pretty boring sometimes.”

Maya couldn’t help but smile at Sarah’s enthusiasm. “That sounds like a much better plan! I’m Maya. Come on in for a slice.”

Sarah’s smile widened as she stepped inside. The warm aroma of food hit her senses. “Wow, that smells amazing! What are you making?”

“Just a simple Thai curry,” Maya replied, gesturing towards the simmering pot. “Would you like some?”

Sarah hesitated for a moment, then a playful smile reappeared. “I wouldn’t mind trying a bite, thanks!”

The next hour flew by. Maya and Sarah sat at the tiny kitchen table, sharing bites of spicy curry and the giant, gooey cookie. They talked about everything and nothing – art, their dreams, and even the strange things they encountered delivering food.

As Sarah prepared to leave, finishing off the last crumbs of the cookie, she turned to Maya.

“This has been the best break I’ve had all week,” Sarah admitted. “Thanks for the delicious food and the company.”

“Thank you too, Sarah,” Maya replied, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. “It was lovely meeting you.”

Suddenly, a thought struck Maya. “Hey, maybe you’d like to join us for dinner sometime this week? There’s plenty of room at this table.”

Sarah’s eyes lit up. “That sounds fantastic! Here’s my number.”

As Sarah left, Maya closed the door with a smile on her face. It had been an unexpected turn of events, but a welcome one. Maybe a sprinkle of spontaneity was exactly what she needed.

Looking around her cosy apartment, the delicious smell of curry still lingering in the air, Maya realized that sometimes, the best things in life weren’t planned. They were delivered on a rainy Saturday night, along with a giant chocolate chip cookie and a new friend.
