Short Story 148 – The New Neighbour

Mia sipped her morning coffee, watching the rain fall outside her apartment window. London weather, she thought with a smile. Even on a gloomy day, the city had a certain energy.

Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from next door. Mia frowned. The apartment next to hers had been empty for months, and the noise startled her.

A few minutes later, a young woman appeared in the hallway, holding a box. She looked flustered, with damp hair plastered to her forehead.

“Hello,” Mia said, offering a friendly smile. “Are you alright?”

The woman jumped a little, surprised. “Oh! Hi there. Yes, I’m fine, just a bit clumsy. I’m Maya, your new neighbour.”

“Mia,” she replied, returning the smile. “Welcome to the building! Moving can be stressful, especially with this weather.”

Maya laughed. “You can say that again! Seems all my books decided to jump out of the box just then.”

Intrigued, Mia asked, “Are you a student?”

“Yes! I just started a postgraduate program at the university nearby. I’m studying art history.”

“That’s amazing! I always loved history, but I work in marketing.”

They chatted for a few more minutes, then Mia realized she was blocking the hallway. “Well, Maya, it was nice meeting you. Maybe we can get coffee sometime soon?”

“Absolutely! I’d love that,” Maya replied. “And sorry again about the noise earlier.”

The next few days were busy for Mia. Work was demanding, and she barely had time to think about her new neighbour. But then, one Saturday morning, the aroma of fresh baking filled the hallway. Mia’s stomach rumbled.

Curiosity piqued, she walked out her door. The smell was coming from next door. Taking a deep breath, she knocked.

“Coming!” came Maya’s voice.

The door opened, revealing Maya in a flour-dusted apron, a tray of warm chocolate chip cookies in her hands. “Mia! Perfect timing. Come in, come in!”

Mia hesitated for a moment, then stepped inside. Maya’s apartment was bright and lively, filled with colourful paintings and bookshelves overflowing with art history texts.

“These cookies smell incredible,” Mia said, taking a seat.

“Thanks!” Maya grinned. “They’re my grandma’s recipe. Want to try one?”

Mia happily accepted a warm cookie. It was soft and delicious, melting in her mouth with every bite.

“Wow,” Mia exclaimed. “These are amazing!”

“See? Told you,” Maya winked. “So, what are you up to today?”

They spent the next few hours chatting and enjoying cookies. Maya talked about her research on ancient Egyptian art, her voice filled with excitement as she described hieroglyphics and hidden meanings in tombs. Mia, in turn, shared stories about the challenges and triumphs of her marketing campaigns, the strategies she used, and the satisfaction of seeing a successful campaign come to life.

As the afternoon wore on, Mia realized something. Having a friendly neighbour like Maya made living in the big city feel a little less lonely. It was nice to come home after a long day and have someone to chat with, someone who genuinely seemed interested in her life.

“This was lovely,” Mia said, standing up to leave. “Thanks for the cookies and the company.”

“Of course! And hey, if you ever need someone to help with art history trivia, you know who to ask,” Maya said with a playful smile.

Mia laughed. “I’ll definitely keep that in mind. See you around, Maya.”

Leaving Maya’s apartment, Mia felt a warm glow inside. Maybe rainy London days weren’t so bad after all, especially with a new friend to share them with. They could explore the city together, discover hidden coffee shops, and maybe even visit some of the museums that held the very pieces of art Maya was so passionate about. The possibilities seemed endless, and Mia couldn’t wait for the next rainy afternoon and another batch of Maya’s delicious cookies.
