Short Story 77 – The Lost Little Hedgehog

Deep in the heart of a moonlit meadow, nestled amongst rustling leaves and fragrant wildflowers, lived a tiny hedgehog named Pip. He was small, even for a baby hedgehog, with prickles as soft as velvet and eyes like sparkling black beads. Pip loved exploring the meadow, sniffing out juicy beetles and giggling at the clumsy hops of the frogs.

One sunny morning, Pip’s mother, Hazel, led him out of their cosy burrow for the first time. The world exploded in a symphony of sights and smells – buzzing bees, dew-kissed grass, and the sweet scent of honeysuckle. Pip, overwhelmed with excitement, scampered away from Hazel, his tiny legs pumping like pistons.

He chased a glimmering butterfly through a patch of vibrant bluebells, then tumbled headfirst into a bed of soft moss, emerging with a crown of green leaves. He giggled, his joy echoing through the meadow.

But as the sun climbed higher in the sky, Pip ventured further and further away from Hazel. He chased a plump beetle into a thick thicket of brambles, his prickles snagging on the thorny branches. Lost and scared, Pip whimpered, the meadow’s once friendly voices now sounding strange and unfamiliar.

Meanwhile, Hazel searched frantically for her missing son. Her heart thumped like a drum in her chest as she called his name, her voice growing hoarse. Owls hooted from the trees, offering no comfort. As twilight began to paint the sky in shades of orange and purple, Hazel collapsed by a trickling stream, tears welling up in her eyes.

Just then, a wise old badger named Barnaby emerged from his burrow. He saw Hazel’s despair and, with a kind grunt, offered his help. Barnaby sniffed the air, his large nose twitching, and followed the faint scent of Pip’s fear. He led Hazel through the darkening meadow, past whispering reeds and sleeping butterflies, until they reached the bramble thicket.

There, curled up and whimpering, was Pip. Hazel rushed to him, scooping him up in her loving embrace. Pip cried into her soft fur, relieved and ashamed. Barnaby smiled gently. “He just got a little lost, Hazel,” he said. “We all do sometimes.”

Hazel thanked Barnaby with a grateful nod and carried Pip back through the moonlit meadow. Pip snuggled close to his mother, the familiar scent of her love washing away his fear. He closed his eyes, vowing never to stray so far again.

Back in their cosy burrow, nestled safely amongst dried leaves and moss, Pip drifted off to sleep. He dreamt of butterfly wings and moonlit meadows, and the comforting rumble of his mother’s heartbeat. He knew he was lucky, blessed with a home filled with love and a forest brimming with adventure, waiting to be explored, but always with his Mama Hazel by his side.
