Short Story 08 – The Beach 2

Steve loved his dog, Bobby. She was a chocolate Vizslador, a cross between a Vizsla and a Labrador. She had a shiny brown coat, floppy ears, and a wagging tail. She was loyal, friendly, and energetic. She was also his best friend.

Steve had bought Bobby from a breeder when she was a puppy. He had stopped work a few years ago, due to poor health and was feeling lonely and bored. He needed some company and joy in his life and Bobby fit the bill perfectly.

Bobby was the perfect companion for him. She made him laugh with her antics, she comforted him when he was sad, she kept him fit with her walks, and she listened to him when he talked. She was always happy to see him and never complained or argued or nagged, it was great for him, being a single, unmarried man with a faithful dog.

Steve and Bobby lived in a terraced house in Somerset, not too far from the coast. They enjoyed exploring the countryside and the seaside together. They had their favourite spots: the park, the woods in the hills, the beach. They knew most of the neighbours and their pets who lived close by. They had a simple but happy life.

One day, Steve decided to take Bobby to the dog beach. It was a sunny day in August and he thought it would be fun to let her play with other dogs and splash in the water. He packed some sandwiches, water, and treats for them both and drove to the beach.

Bobby was excited when she saw the sea. She loved the smell of salt and fish, the sound of waves and seagulls, the sight of sand and shells. She jumped out of the van and ran towards the water, dragging Steve along.

Steve let her off the lead and smiled as he watched her run and jump with joy. He found a spot under an umbrella and sat down on a blanket. He took out his book and started to read.

Bobby’s perspective:

I love the beach! It’s so much fun! There are so many things to see and smell and taste and touch! There are other dogs to play with and humans to greet! There are balls to chase and sticks to fetch! There are waves to splash in and sand to dig! There are seagulls to bark at and crabs to catch! It’s the best place ever!

I run around with my new friends, a golden retriever, a poodle, and a terrier. We race each other on the sand, we wrestle on the shore, we swim in the sea. We share our toys and treats. We have so much fun!

I look for my human every now and then. He is sitting under an umbrella, reading a book. He looks happy too. He waves at me when I come near him. He gives me water and snacks. He tells me I’m a good girl. He rubs my belly and scratches my ears. He loves me so much!

I love him too! He is my favourite human in the world! He takes good care of me. He feeds me yummy food. He plays with me every day. He cuddles with me at night. He talks to me all the time. He is my best friend!

We stay at the beach for a few hours. Then we pack up our things and go back to the van. I’m tired but happy. I had a great day! I can’t wait to go home and take a nap on my bed.

I hop into the back of the van and lie down on the blanket. My human starts the engine and drives away.

He says: “Did you have fun today, Bobby?”

I say: “Woof!”

He says: “Me too, Bobby. Me too.”
